Toyota has officially made the 2022 Tundra a tease for the 2018 model year. In short: we have a sneak peek at what we might see for the next-generation of the Tundra.
Toyota is well known for making quality trucks, but it looks like the company has a new one in the works. This teaser image, which comes from a seemingly trustworthy source, shows a Toyota truck with a pickup bed sporting what could only be a V6 engine. This doesn’t mean the pickup is going to be powered by a V6 engine, but it does point to a future that will no doubt be filled with the company’s new offerings.
After nearly a decade of crossovers, the Toyota Tundra has become one of the most sought-after pickups among consumers. Toyota has been taking the Tundra in new directions with the model year 2018, making it the first pickup to offer a dedicated towing capacity. And it makes sense, considering the Tundra is so popular among the work truck crowd: It offers a high level of features and functionality, practical in-bed cargo space, and a range of powerful engines.
The imminent arrival of the 2022 Toyota Tundra is very interesting for several reasons. First, we haven’t had a new generation of this Toyota truck in over a decade. The second is that the current range of engines is far from being the most powerful and efficient. So a completely new version with a revised transmission could have serious advantages. While there are many rumors circulating about the engine of this new truck, the Japanese manufacturer has just given us an important clue.
Today’s video was released by Toyota just a few hours ago and reveals many important details. Judging by this teaser, the full reveal of the truck is probably closer than you think.
Since the biggest question surrounding the 2022 Toyota Tundra is what its engine lineup will be, let’s analyze this latest video. First, we have the iForce Max symbol on the hood. At first glance, it doesn’t tell you anything, but when you look at the symbol, it does. To the right of the emblem you can see three notches that almost mimic the three cylinders on each side of the engine.
According to Motor1, this matches earlier rumors that the new Tundra would be powered by a twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6. This makes sense, as a turbocharged engine is likely to offer more power and efficiency.
Interestingly, the word Max is highlighted in blue – a design previously used to designate hybrid models in the Toyota range, such as the Prius, Camry and Corolla. So there could be room for an electrified version.
2022 Toyota Tundra Teaser
Whatever engine it gets, it looks like the 2022 Toyota Tundra will get a serious power boost. According to Motor1, Bob Carter, Toyota’s vice president of North American sales, has already confirmed that even the base variant of the engine will outperform the current generation 5.7-liter V8. By comparison : The current Tundra has 381 hp and 401 lb ft.
This power increase is within the range of what some of its fiercest competitors, like the Ford F-150 and Chevy Silverado, can offer with their most powerful powertrains. The most important aspect of this new truck, however, will be whether Toyota can maintain the incredible reliability for which the platform is known.

During the development of the 2022 Toyota Tundra, the Japanese manufacturer kept secrets and teasers under wraps. However, the automaker has released at least two new teasers in a relatively short period of time. It would therefore be unreasonable to expect a full presentation in the near future. If we had to guess, we’d probably get another big teaser, with a full presentation shortly after.
