Most of us have heard that you should meditate at least 20 minutes every day. But how long should you meditate to get real results? Meditation can be thought of as a form of exercise; it requires a little practice and discipline to stick with, but if you put in the time, the payoff is worth it.
For the past year, I have been meditating every morning for about 25 minutes. I do this in addition to my normal routine of exercise and healthy eating. However, at first it was hindering my time. I was trying to fit meditation into my day without realizing that I was not quite as disciplined as I thought. About 2 months ago, I decided to do something different. I started meditating right before I got to work and I would do it during my lunch break.
Meditation is one of the most popular self-help tools on the market, yet there are contradicting claims about how long you should meditate to get real results. Some say you should meditate for an hour a day for 80 days, while others insist that 10 minutes a day is all you need to start feeling better. Some people believe that meditating for a certain length of time will produce certain results. However, if you take the time to really meditate, you’ll reach a state of inner peace, which is a natural byproduct of meditation that is best experienced through repeated practice.
Don’t know how long to meditate? That’s a good question. Would 5 minutes of meditation help you? Or do you need to meditate longer? How much do you have to do to get results?
I keep getting variations of this question. Why? Because everyone’s busy. Yet many people want to meditate. The problem is that you never have enough time. There are other obstacles. Meditation is also difficult because we are not used to sitting still.
And we are not used to letting go of our overactive mind, which is the purpose of meditation. Let’s face it, at first meditation doesn’t evoke warm and fuzzy feelings. For many of us, it’s more of an endorsement of a light and ancient form of self-foliation.

So for many people, if they’re wondering: How long should I meditate? In fact, they ask a different question. It’s more like this: How long can I go without benefits? Do you understand that? If that’s the case, it’s perfectly normal. This is not a problem or an impediment.
Is meditation like going to the movies?
But let’s stop for a moment and do a thought experiment. Think with me and answer this question. What do you like? What makes you really happy? As for me, I was just thinking about going to the movies. When I think about going to the movies, I don’t think about how little time I can devote to the experience. I just think: Hell, yes! I’m gonna see this movie! That’s a completely different reaction.
What if I told you that this is how you can be pulled into meditation? What if I told you that over time you may reach a point where you feel like you can’t meditate enough?
The truth is, if you develop a rich and consistent practice, it’s your experience. This happens to me a lot. Of course, this is not the case in 100% of cases, but it is the majority. So I don’t expect you to immediately feel what meditation is all about: I’m going to the movies! It was at the other end of the spectrum that we started this conversation.
But I want you to keep that in mind when we come back to our original question: How much time should you spend on meditation to get results?
And to answer that question, we must first answer the other question.
What results are you looking for?
What results do you expect from meditation? You want to find peace? Do you suffer from anxiety and stress that you want to manage through meditation? Perhaps you meditate to find a deeper meaning? These are all very good reasons to meditate. And the practice of meditation can help you achieve these results.
But it is also very important to understand that, as with all good things, the results are not always immediate. Meditation is not only a science, but also an art. Yes, if you use your attention diligently and follow your intention with dedication and discipline, you will get results. I have no doubt. But you also have to be patient. Unfortunately, you cannot control how quickly you will get results. In fact, you’re often not even aware that you have results.
Okay, I know. What kind of company do you think it is? You’re asking me to invest all this time, energy and attention, and I don’t see a return on investment?
The truth is we are all so different. We come from different cultures, we have different histories and characters. So you never know how things will turn out. You may see results right away, but it may take days, weeks or even months before you start exercising regularly.
Meditation teaches patience
This is one of the best lessons you can learn from meditation. Cultivate patience and acceptance from the beginning. You cannot control or dictate the outcome of anything. In meditation you let things be as they are, so you accept whatever happens (or doesn’t happen).
This is one of the many unexpected gifts of meditation.
I was 20 years old and I really wanted to be enlightened. I wanted to be a great spiritual hero and looked forward to breakthroughs and great achievements. I had big ideas about myself. It took me years to see real results. And of course, they weren’t the results I expected.
But over time, this practice has worked for me. Slowly but surely, I built the foundations. Maybe I was too ambitious at the time to realize it, but now, at 40, I see that every hour and every minute counts. And it still is.
How long should you meditate?
If you’re just starting out, I recommend meditating for 5 to 10 minutes a day. You can even start with less. Maybe you should do it for a minute in the morning. And if you can sit still and relax during this time, go to 2 minutes. Then extend the time as you become more familiar with the exercise.
The important thing is to get started. The second most important thing is to be consistent. They’re trying to install a new slot. So starting simple is a good solution.
The way I see it, 5 minutes is 100% more than no minutes. This also applies to 1 minute. You just have to do it. You have to start and keep going. Choose a time that suits you and do it every day.
After a few weeks you can start to evaluate the effect and results of meditation. Because we are all different, there is no one right time to meditate. But it is also similar to learning any new skill or lesson on an instrument. The more time you spend on exercise, the more results you will get.
Meditation makes everything a little better
I meditate to experience the part of me that feels limitless. I meditate because I know that when I meditate, I become a better person, kinder, gentler, calmer. I have more patience with myself and with others. But I also find life more enjoyable when I meditate. I feel more connected to life and the cosmos.
These are the real results of my practice. I don’t know when or how they arrived, in what order, or in what proportion to the time I spent on them. But these are real results, and I have no doubt about that.
These days I like to sit on a pillow if I haven’t sat on it too long. Is it better than going to the movies? Well, let me put it this way. It makes the movies even better. It makes everything a little better.
So when it comes to how long you have to spend to get results? I don’t think you can do anything wrong. Just pick a number you can handle, be consistent and let it go.
